چکیده

“Is carbogen gas effective in the treatment of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss?” Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss, also known as “sudden deafness”, involves an abrupt, usually unilateral, partial or complete loss f hearing. For most patients, there is no factor known to account for the deafness and no consensus about the ost effective treatment. Patients with this condition may recover spontaneously, although this is difficult to predict in individual cases. For a number of years, some staff at Monash Medical Centre treated sudden deafness with carbogen gas (5% carbon dioxide and 95% oxygen), which was thought to improve oxygenation of tissues in the inner ear. The treatment appears safe, although its safety is poorly substantiated in the literature. It involves long inpatient stays, and considerable time, resources and inconvenience. The head of the ENT department requested assessment of the evidence of the clinical effectiveness of carbogen gas for idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss.

[Measurement of cochlear blood flow during exploratory tympanotomy in patients suspected of having perilymphatic fistulas].

Since impairment of cochlear blood flow is one of the factors implicated in the pathophysiology of sudden deafness, we measured cochlear blood flow in nine patients suspected of having perilymphatic fistulas. All but one patient had sudden sensorineural hearing loss. The exceptional case had experienced rotatory vertigo immediately after nose-blowing. In the eight patients with sudden deafness,...

Comparative Analysis of the Combined Therapeutic Effects of Lipoprostaglandin E1 on Sudden Idiopathic Sensorineural Hearing Loss

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Viral and vascular disorders are considered to be a major cause of idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL). Lipoprostaglandin E1 (lipo-PGE1) has vasodilating activity and has been used to treat ISSNHL. The purpose of this study was to determine the specific therapeutic effects of lipo-PGE1 and compare them to other treatment modalities for ISSNHL. SUBJE...

Therapeutic Effects of Carbogen Inhalation and Lipo-Prostaglandin E1 in Sudden Hearing Loss

PURPOSE Vascular disorders and viral infections are considered the main causes of sudden hearing loss (SHL), although its pathogenesis remain unclear. Treatments include carbogen inhalation and lipo-prostaglandin E1 (lipo-PGE1), both of which have circulation-enhancing effects. We investigated the effectiveness of carbogen inhalation and lipo-PGE1 in SHL. MATERIALS AND METHODS This retrospect...
